Southern Belle Red Clover | ||
Southern Belle' ('FLMR7') is an improved 'Cherokee' red clover with increased root knot nematode and powdery mildew resistance, similar dormancy response to Cherokee and high, early forage yield. Southern Belle is superior to all known red clover cultivars in resistance to common root-knot nematode species, including the Northern Root-Knot Nematode (M. hapla). In field cultivar evaluation experiments, Southern Belle had equal or superior resistance to powdery mildew, caused by Erysiphe polygoni, as Cherokee and other mid- and late-dormant cultivars such as 'Cinnamon', Southern Bell has been shown to be equal to Cherokee in northern anthracnose susceptibility. Southern Belle is a very early spring-maturing variety that has high forage potential soon after temperatures warm. Southern Belle was developed by Ken Quesenberry at the University of Florida.
